This summer has been a good one for backyard visitors.
This beautiful black swallowtail butterfly showed up last week looking for some sun on our mulch bed when I noticed him and took a few shots. The Black Swallowtail is a common species found throughout Ontario, and is attracted to gardens with host plants like parsley, dill, and other members of the carrot family. Not surprisingly, I found this one near our carrot bed.
This large, black butterfly has yellow and blue spots on its wings and typically emerges in two broods per year, from mid-May to late June and again from mid-July to August. They are found in gardens and wilder areas like meadows and are an important pollinator species.
He’s welcome in our yard.
